Pickup Truck Rental in Calgary: The Complete Guide

What a Calgary pickup rental actually costs once per-kilometre fees are counted, what fits in a 5-foot-8 box, what you legally cannot do with a rented truck, and which of our four GMC Sierra 1500s to book.

There are two ways to rent a pickup in Calgary and they fail differently.

The counter route — U-Haul, the airport agencies, the downtown branches — advertises a low day rate and makes its money on the second number. U-Haul’s pickup lists at $19.95 a day and then charges roughly $0.99 per kilometre on an in-town rental. Drive to Banff and back and the mileage alone adds about $257 to a twenty-dollar rental. The airport counters skip the per-kilometre game and simply charge $150 to $200 a day, plus the YYC concession surcharge, for a fleet F-150 with 120,000 km on it.

The peer-to-peer route fixes the pricing and usually breaks on availability. Most Turo hosts in Calgary own one truck. The truck is fine and the host is fine, but if it is booked or in the shop on your dates, your Saturday is gone with it.

We run four GMC Sierra 1500 Elevations out of Calgary, spec’d deliberately alike, for that second reason. This page is the short version of everything we have written about renting one.

How much does it cost to rent a pickup truck in Calgary?

The honest comparison is not the day rate, it is the day rate plus kilometres plus the fee you find out about at the end. A $19.95 U-Haul pickup driven to Canmore and back is a roughly $150 rental once the per-kilometre meter is tallied; Calgary customers have posted about quotes in the $70s arriving as invoices north of $200. A day rate with no per-kilometre meter is a structurally different product, and it is the only kind we offer.

We have broken the arithmetic out three ways, because the answer changes depending on what you are doing with the truck:

What fits in a GMC Sierra 1500 bed?

The 5-foot-8 box with the tailgate down takes 8-foot lumber and full 4x8 sheets of plywood — sheets lie flat, 2x4s ride at an angle with a flag on the end. Straps live in the truck. What the box will not swallow standing up is a fridge or a tall dresser, which is the single most common thing people discover after they have already booked.

The tonneau cover locks, which turns the bed into enclosed storage rather than an open tray. That is the difference between leaving tools or bikes in the truck while you eat in Canmore and not being able to.

The full load-by-load breakdown is here, including the Costco and IKEA runs and the City of Calgary landfill math — Throw ‘n’ Go charges a $25 minimum and does not exceed it until the load passes 250 kg, which a bed of yard waste or renovation offcuts rarely does.

Can you tow a trailer with a rented pickup truck?

No. Towing with a rented vehicle is prohibited under Turo’s terms of service, and that applies to all four of our trucks without exception.

We would rather say that plainly here than have someone book a Sierra assuming they can hook up a trailer and find out at handover. If you need a trailer at a campsite and do not own a truck rated to pull it, the answer is our delivered travel trailer, where we do the towing — not a rented pickup.

Do rental trucks in Calgary come with winter tires?

Not reliably. Enterprise puts it in writing that winter tires cannot be reserved and depend on what is on the lot when you arrive; other counters quote $15 to $25 a day for them where they have any at all.

All four of our Sierras move onto winter tires in September, ahead of the October 1 date that matters, and there is no line item for it. That date matters more than most visitors realise, because Alberta and British Columbia run different winter tire laws and the boundary sits in the middle of an ordinary Banff day trip.

Which Sierra 1500 should I book?

For hauling work, any of them — they are interchangeable, so book on dates, price and whichever colour you like.

Three are 2025 Elevations in black, grey and white. The fourth is a 2026 Elevation, which adds a factory sunroof, a blacked-out exterior, larger wheels and an upgraded interior. Mechanically it is the same truck: same 5.3L V8, same crew cab, same box, same fuel burn. The difference is trim, not capability, and there is no penalty for picking any of the others.

Every truck carries an annual Parks Canada Discovery Pass on the mirror. With the Canada Strong Pass free-admission window closed since September 7, 2026, the gate charges $12.25 per adult and $24.50 for a family arriving in one vehicle — a three-day Rockies trip for a family of four is about $73.50 of admission that does not land on your bill.
