Can You Rent a Travel Trailer Near Calgary Without a Tow Vehicle? A 2026 Guide for First-Time Renters

Most first-time renters book a travel trailer before checking whether their SUV can legally pull it. Here's how RVezy delivery solves that problem in Calgary — and what to verify on the listing before you book.

Most first-time RV renters in Calgary find out the hard way that the travel trailer they just booked is legally too heavy for the SUV sitting in their driveway. It usually happens in a predictable order: book the trailer, get excited, mention the trip to a friend who tows, hear the friend say “wait, what are you pulling it with?” — and then the spreadsheet starts.

If that’s where you are right now, or where you’re about to be, this post is the version of that conversation we’ve had with more than a few customers over the last two seasons.

The tow-vehicle problem nobody mentions at booking time

Every travel trailer has a GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) printed on a yellow sticker inside the door. That is the number your tow vehicle has to be legally rated to pull — not the empty “dry weight” on the marketing page. For context, our 2020 Yetti ships at 5,875 lb (~2,665 kg) dry. Load a full fresh-water tank, two propane tanks, bedding, food, camp chairs, and bikes, and you are comfortably over 6,500 lb on the highway. The GVWR on the door sticker, which is the legal ceiling, is higher still.

The second number that bites people is tongue weight: the downward force the trailer puts on the hitch ball. On a trailer in the Yetti’s class that is usually 500–700 lb (~230–320 kg). Your SUV’s hitch has to handle that, the hitch has to be the right class, and the vehicle has to have enough rear axle and suspension capacity to sit level under it.

If you have never towed before, those two numbers are the ones that actually decide whether the trip happens.

One thing first-timers sometimes get wrong

Passengers ride in the tow vehicle, not in the trailer. While a travel trailer is being towed on any public road in Canada, nobody is allowed inside it — not the kids, not the dog, not grandma. Everyone rides in your truck or SUV. This is a legal rule, an insurance rule, and a safety rule (a trailer that comes uncoupled or rolls has no seatbelts and no airbags). If your tow vehicle doesn’t have enough seats for your whole group, that is another reason to look at delivery: your group travels in whatever vehicle suits them, and we bring the trailer separately.

Why your crossover or mid-size SUV probably can’t pull a 3-season travel trailer

Our 2020 Yetti four-season travel trailer is 5,875 lb dry, before you add a drop of water. Which means the common “I have an XC60 / Outback / RAV4 / Explorer” answer is a no on a self-tow basis — even the Ford Explorer is under the Yetti’s dry weight. Even a Grand Cherokee is tight once the trailer is loaded. Most similar-spec trailer rentals in the Calgary area are in the same weight class — people just don’t always find out until they are deep into a booking.

The real answer for first-time renters: delivery

If your driveway has a half-ton pickup with a factory tow package — F-150, Ram 1500, Silverado/Sierra, Tundra — or a full-size SUV like a Tahoe/Yukon or Expedition, you are likely fine weight-wise. A few things still catch people out on the day of pickup:

  1. Hitch class. A Class III hitch (rated up to 8,000 lb trailer weight / 800 lb tongue weight with a weight-distribution system) is the minimum we will hand the Yetti over to. Class II hitches — common on older SUVs — are not enough.
  2. Brake controller. Alberta requires an electric brake controller for trailers over 910 kg GVWR. The Yetti is well over that. If your truck does not have a factory-integrated controller and you have not added an aftermarket one, we cannot legally release the trailer to you.
  3. Hitch ball size and height. 2-5/16” ball, correctly torqued, at the right drop/rise so the trailer sits level. A level trailer tracks straight and brakes evenly; a nose-up or nose-down trailer is the reason a lot of first-time tows end with white-knuckle sway on Highway 1.
  4. 7-pin round connector. Not the 4-pin flat — the 7-pin handles running lights, brake lights, turn signals, electric brakes, and the battery charge line. Test it before you leave our driveway.

If any of those four are missing or questionable, delivery is almost always faster than sourcing the parts the day before your trip.

What does May long weekend 2026 actually look like?

This is also the practical argument for the Yetti specifically over a cheaper 3-season option for shoulder-season trips. The enclosed insulated underbelly and the dual-source (propane + electric) furnace are the reason it sleeps warm when the 3-season trailer parked next to it is defrosting its tanks in the morning sun.

What to verify on the listing before you hit “request to book”

Last thing, in the order we would check it:

  1. Pickup vs. delivery — does the host offer delivery at all, and to the campground you have booked?
  2. Weight numbers — GVWR on the door sticker, not just the shipping weight.
  3. Tongue weight — and whether a weight-distribution hitch is required.
  4. Brake controller — required on your tow vehicle if self-towing.
  5. Generator / solar — matters if you are booked into an unserviced site.
  6. Winterization status — shoulder-season trips only. Confirm water systems are active, not winterized.
  7. Mileage policy — some trailers have per-km overage charges beyond an included allowance.
  8. Pet policy and smoking policy — the two most common reasons for post-trip fee surprises.
